Scarlett Johansson is an American actress and singer. She is born in NYC, in the United States on November 22, 1984. Her acting has earned her acclaim across a wide spectrum of genres such as period dramas, thrillers and action films. Johansson was the daughter of an architect and a producer was brought up in New York City. The twin brothers Hunter and her brother Hunter were her youngest siblings. She began to develop an interest for acting at an early age. She began to audition for commercials around the age of seven. Soon after she enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and later was a student at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan to improve her acting skills. As a child, she starred alongside Ethan Hawke in the Off-Broadway production Sophistry and, at the age of nine she made her film debut in Rob Reiner's North (1994). Johansson later appeared on screen in Just Cause (1995) but her breakthrough was Manny & Lo (1996) an upcoming film that follows siblings who are orphaned and run away. She next earned critical applause for her performance as a teenager who has suffered an injury that is disfiguring in The Horse Whisperer (1998) while she was also acclamated in the role of a cynical teenager Rebecca in Ghost World (2001).
